Hiking and the cableway are different experiences
There are two main ways to reach the top. Hiking routes such as Platteklip Gorge take roughly two to three hours up for most reasonably fit walkers. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a separate, ticketed attraction that runs when weather allows.
Many hikers walk up and ride down, but remember the cableway can stop running at short notice if wind picks up — always be prepared to walk down.
Pick your weather window
The mountain makes its own weather. The famous 'tablecloth' of cloud can roll over the summit quickly, reducing visibility. Clear, calm mornings are best; check the forecast and the cableway's status before you go.
What to pack
At least two litres of water per person, sun protection, a warm and windproof layer, snacks and a charged phone. Sturdy shoes with grip are essential — the steps are high and uneven.
Hike with others
Don't hike alone. Go with friends or a guide, tell someone your route, and save local emergency numbers in your phone before you set off.
